Oproep voor referaten: Inter-Breyten - Breytenbach in context

Het Gents Centrum voor Afrikaans en de Studie van Zuid-Afrika (www.afrikaans.ugent.be) nodigt u van harte uit voorstellen in te dienen voor een tweedaags colloquium over Breytenbach in context. Het congres heeft plaats in Gent op 26-27 november 2026.

De intrinsieke verwevenheid van de literaire, artistieke en intellectuele nalatenschap van Breyten Breytenbach (1939-2024) nodigt uit tot interdisciplinaire en comparatistische onderzoeksvragen. Naast het literaire en beeldende oeuvre zijn de politiek-ideologische, taal- en cultuurfilosofische opvattingen, zoals het pan-Afrikaanse ideeëngoed, taalpolitieke kwesties omtrent het Afrikaans en het Zen-Boeddhistisch referentiekader, voorwerp van onderzoek. Vanuit transnationaal opzicht wordt dan weer de meervoudige beeldvorming in diverse taal- en cultuurgebieden onderzocht.

Het symposium belicht vanuit een vergelijkend perspectief, uitgaande van meerdere facetten van Breytenbachs publieke persoonlijkheid, connecties met andere schrijvers (teksten, poëtica’s), filosofen, beeldende kunstenaars en politieke denkers. Hierbij kan ook worden gedacht aan de nawerking of het “Nachleben” van Breytenbachs postuur.

Met behulp van een meervoudige onderzoeklens wordt het prismatisch karakter van het creatieve en beschouwende oeuvre van Breytenbach bestudeerd, telkens in context: in verband met het complex van esthetische, ideologische en filosofische gedachten waarin Breytenbachs stem resoneert. Diverse referentiekaders worden tegen het licht gehouden: bijvoorbeeld pan-Afrikaanse opvattingen, surrealistische en andere modernistische esthetische discoursen, het Afrikaans in Zuid-Afrikaanse context, politiek verzet tegen apartheid, enzovoorts. Eventuele focuspunten zijn:

·       internationale beeldvorming en connecties

·       intertekstuele en intermediale referenties

·       interpersoonlijke netwerken

·       inter-Afrikaanse denkbeelden

Ook aan de archiefvorming van een productief en multidisciplinair kunstenaar zoals Breytenbach zal aandacht worden besteed. Het werk wordt besproken tegen de achtergrond van het esthetische  en politieke klimaat waarin Breytenbach decennialang actief was, met belangstelling voor (interculturele) verbintenissen met andere taal- en denkopvattingen, de positionering in het debat over het Afrikaans.

Call for Papers: Inter-Breyten - Breytenbach in Context

 

The Ghent Centre for Afrikaans and the Study of South Africa (www.afrikaans.ugent.be) warmly invites submissions for a two-day conference on Breyten Breytenbach in Context, to be held in Ghent on 26-27 November 2026.

 

Using a plural research lens, the symposium examines the prismatic nature of the creative and reflective oeuvre by Breyten Breytenbach (1939-2024). It takes a contextual approach to seek to understand the artist-philosopher in relation to the complex of aesthetic, ideological, and philosophical ideas in which his voice resonates. Various frames of reference will be scrutinized, such as pan-African thought, surrealist and other modernist cultural discourses, Afrikaans within the South African context, political resistance to apartheid, and so forth. Possible themes include:

 

  • international reception and connections

  • intertextual and intermedial references

  • interpersonal networks

  • inter-African ideas

 

The symposium highlights various facets of Breytenbach’s public persona, exploring connections with other writers (e.g. texts, poetics), philosophers, visual artists, and political thinkers. Attention may also be given to the afterlife or Nachleben of Breytenbach’s stature and work. This includes the formation and preservation of archives relating to a productive and multidisciplinary artist such as Breytenbach. His work will be discussed against the background of the aesthetic and political climate in which he was active for decades, with particular interest in (intercultural) connections to other linguistic and intellectual traditions, as well as his positioning in debates on Afrikaans.

 

Breytenbach in Context builds on transnational and analytical research by scholars who have studied the poet's literary and visual oeuvre, his political-ideological, linguistic, and cultural-philosophical views—such as pan-African thought, language-political issues surrounding Afrikaans, and Zen Buddhist frames of reference—as well as his transnational reception.

Die Gentse Sentrum vir Afrikaans en die Studie van Suid-Afrika (www.afrikaans.ugent.be) nooi met graagte voorleggings uit vir ’n tweedaagse konferensie oor Breytenbach in Konteks, wat op 26-27 November 2026 in Gent sal plaasvind.

 

Met ’n meervoudige navorsingslens ondersoek die simposium die prismatiese aard van die kreatiewe en reflektiewe oeuvre van Breyten Breytenbach (1939-2024). ’n Kontekstuele benadering word gevolg om die kunstenaar-filosoof te verstaan in verhouding tot die kompleks van estetiese, ideologiese en filosofiese idees waarin sy stem weerklink. Verskeie verwysingsraamwerke sal onder die loep geneem word, soos pan-Afrikaanse denke, surrealistiese en ander modernistiese kulturele diskoerse, Afrikaans binne die Suid-Afrikaanse konteks, politieke weerstand teen apartheid, ensovoorts. Moontlike temas sluit in:

 

•       internasionale resepsie en verbintenisse

•       intertekstuele en intermediale verwysings

•       interpersoonlike netwerke

•       inter-Afrikaanse idees

 

Die simposium belig verskeie fasette van Breytenbach se openbare persona en verken verbintenisse met ander skrywers (bv. tekste, poëtika), filosowe, beeldende kunstenaars en politieke denkers. Aandag kan ook geskenk word aan die nageskiedenis of Nachleben van Breytenbach se statuur en werk. Dit sluit die vorming en bewaring van argiewe in wat verband hou met ’n produktiewe en multidissiplinêre kunstenaar soos Breytenbach. Sy werk sal bespreek word teen die agtergrond van die estetiese en politieke klimaat waarin hy vir dekades aktief was, met besondere belangstelling in (interkulturele) verbintenisse met ander linguistiese en intellektuele tradisies, asook sy posisionering binne debatte oor Afrikaans.

Breytenbach in Konteks bou voort op transnasionale en analitiese navorsing deur akademici wat die digter se literêre en visuele oeuvre, sy politieke-ideologiese, linguistiese en kultuurfilosofiese standpunte – soos pan-Afrikaanse denke, taal-politieke kwessies rakende Afrikaans en Zen-Boeddhistiese verwysingsraamwerke – asook sy transnasionale resepsie bestudeer het.
